Summerside is a Canadian city with a present population of 14,500 residents within Prince County, Prince Edward Island. It is the second largest city within the province and the principal municipality for the western part of the island.
Summerside was formally incorporated as a town on the 1st of April, 1877, and reincorporated as a city on the 1st of April, 1995.
The cities biggest company is the Canada Revenue Agency, that at its Summerside Tax Centre, administers the Goods and Services Tax or likewise known as GST.
The Slemon Park business park hosts a concentration of some aerospace and transportation businesses in former military buildings; Vector Aerospace Engine Services Atlantic overhauls and repairs Gas Turbine aircraft engines, Testori Americas produces mass transit surface vehicles and interiors for aircraft, and Honeywell repairs and manufactures components for aircraft.
New Annon is a faraway community near Summerside, that is home to Cavendish Farms operations, Prince Edward Island's largest private sector employer. Cavendish Farms features two large processing plants in New Annan. The outlying community of Borden-Carleton has several vital companies for Summerside residents, including McCain Foods Limited which operates a frozen foods processing plant.
During 1990, CFB Summerside, presently Slemon Park, started to aggressively pursue new business opportunities. With help from the city of Summerside, they created the Economic Development Office to be able to help bring new investment to the city.
The region around the city of Summerside was once home to the world's biggest concentration of Tame Silver Fox farms. This is highlighted at the Silver Fox Museum.
The city of Summerside is the only place within Prince Edward Island to run an independent electric utility. After purchasing Charlottetown Light & Power in 1918, Maritime Electric consolidated electric distribution on the island. The company offered to take over the operations within Summerside, but backed down after citizens rejected several offers. Ever since the year 1961, the Summerside distribution grid has been connected to the maritime Electric network.
A lot of the electricity produced traditionally has been obtained from the neighboring provincial electric utility, NB Power. 76.5% of its power during 2008, were acquired from NB Power. Although the Summerside Electric Commission has its very own diesel turbine at the Harvard Street Generating Station which could run for several days independently of NB Power's supply, it is just utilized in exceptional situations such as power disruptions with New Brunswick or parts of the Maritime Electric power system which feed the city of Summerside.
